Fetal cardiology is a field devoted to the care of the fetus with congenital heart disease.
When a heart defect in the fetus is suspected, a more in-depth and detailed examination of the fetal heart is performed using echocardiography (ultrasound imaging of the heart). Using this technique, often an early diagnosis can be made (usually between 18-20 weeks gestation) so that there may be appropriate planning, coordination of care and family/genetic counseling during the remainder of the pregnancy.
Even before the baby is born, the specific surgery and timing
of surgery can be determined for a smoother transition and to help relieve
parental and familial anxiety. Pediatric cardiologists who are trained in
fetal cardiology work closely with the perinatalogists and obstetricians
and are dedicated to taking care of the unborn baby with congenital heart
disease to improve their chance of survival, even for babies with the most
complex heart defects.
When should a fetal echocardiogram be considered during a pregnancy?
In-utero drug/medication exposure (e.g. antiseizure medication,
lithium) or infection (e.g. CMV) At Knoxville Pediatric Cardiology, we have board certified pediatric cardiologists who can take care of the fetus with congenital heart disease.
